Dreamwidth
Jun. 18th, 2012 03:56 pmI'm still trying to get my head around Dreamwidth.
Still trying to work out what people's choice of pictures say about them, people's interests, descriptions of themselves...
As well as making links with people who have similar interests to myself and who have similar values, I'd like to make links with people from different cultures so that I can learn from others and learn more about the world and what makes people tick, especially the Eastern block. Russian, Poland, Ukraine, anywhere else around that part of the world - I know hardly anything about you.
If you stumble on this journal, for whatever reason - I'd love to hear from you.

Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-18 04:18 pm (UTC)This the Latest Things Page, which would be how I stumbled on your journal. If you haven't cruised LT before, it's a great way to stumble into people.
I'm from South Africa, write fanfic (and other things), and I have a bunch of regular DW and LJ pals who are from Canada, the US, the UK, and Israel.
Hope you enjoy DW. In my none-too-humble opinion, tis an awesome space.

Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-18 05:38 pm (UTC)I've been on Livejournal for a few weeks and this seems very similar except that there's fewer people? and it hasn't got that 'guests' monitor which is quite an interesting feature of LJ.
Hello from England!
Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-19 02:38 am (UTC)LJ's guests and stats features can be (somewhat) replicated by Google Analytics. In other words, you can activate the service as opt-in (sign up with GA first, then log in to DW, go to Account Settings, then click the Display tab, and scroll down to activate GA). LJ's stats feature is often considered an invasion of privacy, because one can't opt out of it. Also, LJ makes use of it to decide what ads to display on your LJ to those who don't have paid accounts.
See ya round.

Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-19 07:17 am (UTC)I've now signed up with GA but can't see the option to activate it on the display tab.
Sorry, I feel like I'm using you as a helpdesk.
Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-19 07:23 am (UTC)In the Display tab, scroll down and find a Header that says "Google Analytics ID." It's just below another header that says "Safe Search Filter."
But actually, I dunno why the GA settings are in the Display tab. Would make more sense in the History tab...
Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-19 10:18 am (UTC)The 'google anayltics ID' isn't listed below 'safe search filter'.
I'm guessing that I've set up my Google analtics wrong.
I've got a 'visitors overview' on 'google analytic' itself but it's not appearing on my dreamwidth page??
Sorry to be such a pain.
How are things in South Africa by the way?
Re: Off the Latest Things page
Date: 2012-06-19 11:45 am (UTC)Umm, and I feel a right twit: GA only displays on your DW if you have a Paid, Premium Paid, or Seed account. If you're just mooching about, getting a feel for both LJ and DW, I dunno that you'd want to buy a full Paid account. You could try it out just for a month, though, and that works out pretty cheap.
And it's winter here. At least, it's our version of winter. Currently 25 Celcius, bright'n'sunny. But it actually snowed last week, so we got to pretend for a bit.

Date: 2012-06-19 01:11 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'll leave it if you have to pay, being the cheap-scate that I am.
So your winter's are warmer than our summers...I think the weather is one of the worst things about life in the UK. Still, could be worse.
Have a good day! and thanks again.
Shalom.
